Oregon East

Troubled Sleep

In the deserts of eastern Oregon, where the volcanic terrain is scraped bare of all but low scrub and sagebrush, the tectonics that undergird the world are plainly visible. They represent forces that are unimaginable to us, a slow but inevitable violence expressing itself over millions of years, bullying its way to the surface like an unwelcome dream.

These landscapes are vast not just physically, but also temporally. The juxtaposition of their geologically ancient landforms with ragged threads of human settlement places the natural and anthropogenic forces that shape our world in troubled tension with each other, posing a question: which will ultimately assert dominion over the other?
