I tend to be so project-focused that I often overlook the simple joy of traveling and snapping without worrying about what every picture means.

So I thought I'd share a few shots in the coming weeks from my #iceland sketchbook—just a random collection of things I saw and did in that sublime, evocative place while traveling with my family in the summer of 2022.

And who knows, maybe some of these will make their way into a project. Some day.

I had a beautiful time on Friday presenting my project-in-progress called "Scattered Seeds: Community Seed Savers in the Diaspora" at UT Arlington. My talk hinged on why working on a project about social-environmental redemption is a new and sometimes uncomfortable mode for me, as well as an opportunity to explore working with collage and my new obsession, "plant portraits."

Very excited to be visiting UT Arlington next week for the Hermanns Lecture Series on Food & Environmental Justice. I'll be putting together an exhibition of my pictures, giving a talk on a new project-in-progress about community seed farmers and seed savers, and leading a new workshop with Allison Carruth called "Creative Practice for Social Impact." For the workshop we'll be mining footage from a decade-old collaborative project about a small fishing community in Brazil to make the short film we always wanted to but never quite managed to pull together. So much good stuff!

The physical and political landscapes of California have been shaped by a fundamental problem of hydrology: most of the state’s water falls in the far north where most of its people and economic centers are not. The horn-rimmed prophet of the California Water Plan in the 1950s and 60s, Governor Pat Brown, called this inversion of water supply to water demand a mere “accident of people and geography”—as if no more troublesome than an engineer’s rounding error. He made correcting the aberration central to his legacy, which to this day defines modern California.

Watershed is my photographic exploration of the ecological, and increasingly existential, problem of water in California. The project represents 7 years of field work and research and is condensed for this show into 27 images divided into 4 thematic groupings: source, control, damage and use.

My show about the ecological, and increasingly existential, problem of water in California opened this week at Princeton University's Bernstein Gallery. The project represents 7 years of field work and research and is condensed for this show into 27 images divided into 4 thematic groupings: source, control, damage and use. If you're local to NJ/NY/PA we'll have an opening reception and talk on 9/28 (more info on that soon) and the show will be up through 10/18.
