My show about the ecological, and increasingly existential, problem of water in California opened this week at Princeton University's Bernstein Gallery. The project represents 7 years of field work and research and is condensed for this show into 27 images divided into 4 thematic groupings: source, control, damage and use. If you're local to NJ/NY/PA we'll have an opening reception and talk on 9/28 (more info on that soon) and the show will be up through 10/18. Today I interfaced with an AI bot intentionally and directly for the first time, and together we made this arresting image. Using a simple text query, I described an environmental crisis that's been occupying my imagination (and dreams) for awhile and this is how the bot reflected it - and myself - back to me.

There's a righteous conversation to be had about the ethics of AI creations. Then again, painters said some of the same shit when photography was invented. Film photographers said some of the same shit when digital image making and Photoshop arrived and changed everything.

I'm a photographer who still shoots film for many of my projects. I still believe in The Analog. And I'm uneasy about the ease with which AIs can make things, and about how those things can be used by people to deceive.

But my experience today was a little like stepping out of the spaceship and setting foot on the moon for the first time. It was profound and I can't shake the feeling that this new tool will do astounding and important things.
